I obviously haven’t updated this blog in some time. For the past few years I’ve been blogging at http://anhonestencounter.wordpress.com, so if you happen to find your way to China Thinking, head over to Honest Encounters for my musings on life, faith, and whatever else happens to be on my mind.

1/17/2012 *Update*

As you can see in this post (https://chinathinking.wordpress.com/2011/12/18/taiwan/)  I did not ending up going back to mainland China for study abroad. Instead, I decided to try something a little different and found my way to Taiwan. I did not, however, want to abandon the blog, especially since I know I will eventually return to the mainland. So, I’ve kept the blog title as China Thinking. After all, Taiwan and China are “one” ;).

In 2008, when I was a junior in high school, I received a letter in the mail from the People to People Student Ambassador program. Little did I know this short letter would change my life. Why? Because it was an invitation to an information session about an upcoming trip to China. Eight months and lots of fundraising later I was on a plane headed to the People’s Republic of China for 17 days of my summer. Prior to this trip I knew very little about China (note: I’ve come to realize I had more knowledge about the county than the average 16 year old, yet in the grand scheme of things I was pretty ignorant about the country); by the time I returned to the U.S., however, I knew that that my interests in life had been radically transformed.

Fast forward four years. I am now a junior in college, and unsurprisingly, a Chinese minor. I have been incredibly blessed with the Freeman Foundation Fellowship for Undergraduate Research. As I type this intro about myself (May 2011) I have four days before I leave for China a second time, this time to research education policy in Shanghai and Shanxi. Armed with more knowledge of the people, culture, and language of the place I’m researching, as well as a small group of friends and my Chinese teacher, I’m once again off to the “Middle Kingdom”.

This blog (as I conceive of it now anyway) will focus on my  thoughts and experiences in China, and Chinese language and culture as I interact with it in the U.S. I’m particularly interested in seeing if/how my experience differs from my companions (all white and Asian) and other bloggers (mostly white), so I will definitely talk about the African American experience in China. I’ll be in China for five weeks the summer of 2011 doing research then will be back to China again January-June (possibly August) 2012.

Please bear with me (especially in the beginning) as I’ve never had a blog before, other than tumblr.

If you’d like to contact me you can email me at chinathinking@yahoo.com.

Stay tuned for some (hopefully) good blog posts!
